Every remake I had to do in my early days taught me something new about measurement. Eventually, I developed a systematic approach that virtually eliminated measurement-related remakes.

Step 2: Initial Site Assessment
Cabinet Quality Check

• Solid, secure mounting
• Clean, finished installation
Red Flags
• Cabinets visibly out of level

When to Stop and Reschedule
If cabinets are significantly out of level (more than 1/4" over 8 feet) or unstable, stop the measurement and reschedule after cabinet issues are resolved. Measuring over poor cabinet work leads to poor results.
Step 3: Systematic Measurement Process
The Three-Point Measurement Rule
Never rely on a single measurement. Always measure each dimension from three points:
For Length Measurements
• Front edge of cabinet
• Center of cabinet depth
• Back edge against wall
For Depth Measurements
• Left end of run
• Center of longest section
• Right end of run
Pro Tip: If measurements vary by more than 1/8", investigate why. Walls aren't always straight, and cabinets aren't always perfectly installed.
